The hosts failed to clear Giorgio Chiellini’s left-wing cross and Bonucci stabbed home from close range past Anthony Lopes.

The victory will see Juventus head into the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie as favourites.

It was also the fourth time in five matches in the competition this season that the Turin giants have managed to keep a clean sheet.

However, Bonucci admits that they struggled to break down the Lyon defence in the opening 45 minutes and is pleased to have earned his side an “important” victory with his goal.

“In the first half we struggled to find the right spaces to play our football, while after the break we didn’t risk anything other than on set plays,” the Italy international told Mediaset.

“Lyon ran so hard in the first half, but in the second we were able to bring home a very important victory.”

The second leg of the tie will be held in Turin next Thursday.
